Day 118: Closet Monster

After working what should be my final weekend, box office shift, I had an urge to purge. I’d been warning the hubs that we need to organize and clean our closets soon, and it happened today.

When I first moved in to his condo, the hubs had an Elfa closet from The Container Store installed so that we could both share the long narrow closet in the master bedroom. In order for all the shelves, bars and drawers to fit, we had to remove the bi-fold doors. “No worry,” we said. “Everything will look so nice because of the Elfa organization, we won’t need doors.” His side managed to stay that way (all he has are suits and dress shirts), but mine ended up looking a mess.

But after spending some quality time being honest about how much I wear a lot of items, it now looks much nicer. Not only did we fill up two garbage bags full of clothes to sell/donate, we also went through all of our drawers and our coat closet. Everything is organized and neat. I even dusted the shelves! And I feel so much better.

Sometimes happiness comes from an organized environment. I know, many times, I’ve sat down to do other work and just can’t when the space I’m in feels messy or cluttered. Taking the time to keep things nice just feels better!

Compare and contrast.

This is my half of the closet. It might not look extremely different, but I promise there is less of everything. And the drawers look amazing.

Day 116: Experiment

Elphie’s and my walk today was more like an experiment: can I take pictures with my new camera and walk her at the same time? The answer, reached via the scientific method of course, is not really. But here is a sample of what I photographed anyway, along with some others of E at home.

Day 97: Rearranging Things

As I mentioned earlier, today did not begin well. The hubs and I were meant to go to Washington, DC to ring in the New Year with friends. When I woke up this morning, I was so nauseous, sore and tired that I could not move without feeling like I was going to be ill. I was barely able to get out of bed let alone go to the airport and get on a plane. So the hubs made all the calls to get us out of our trip.

I wrote a couple of days ago that I’ve been going too much, and I think this was still the issue today. With a disease like RA, fatigue can be just as much of an obstacle as joint pain or the threat of infection. I’m finally at a place where medication really seems to be working and I do my best to protect against infections. Unfortunately, fatigue is getting the best of me now. However, because we are no longer traveling and also not working, the hubs and I can now spend these next couple days relaxing.

After sleeping for the first half of the day, I made my way to the couch in time for the very end of the Bears game. Even though the rest of the afternoon was spent on the couch, I knew I had to do something fun to save the day. The hubs and I had been talking for sometime about rearranging our living room after we acquired a few much needed furniture pieces.

So, with minimal effort on my part, Christmas decor came down, an old rug was removed and all the furniture except our large couch found a new home. Much to our delight, our small living room now feels brand new and much bigger!

Day 93: Coming Home

The hubs and I drove back from our holiday travels today. We had great visits with both his family and mine but it always feels like it isn’t long enough. Even so, when I got home (because I went straight from relaxing time with family to stressful day at work) I was SO glad to be here.

I came in like a storm, hurtling coats and shoes in crazy directions, headed right for the lovely meal the hubs spent the afternoon cooking (turkey meatloaf with mushroom, zucchini and red pepper mixed in and a side of roasted brussel sprouts), inhaled it and proceeded to get ready for bed at 8:30pm. I plan to spend the rest of the night lounging on our cozy sectional cuddled in my new furry blanket watching Project Runway Allstars with Elphie. Man, it’s good to be home.

Day 87: Meditation in 10 Minutes

After finishing wrapping gifts, coordinating my schedule, planning for a meeting, researching restaurants for our first married Christmas, and cleaning the whole apartment, I needed a moment of zen. While I’ve never tried meditation before nor have I read anything about it, I decided to see if I could just do it. I set my phone timer for 10 minutes (that I figured would seem like an eternity), sat in an alert yet comfortable position and closed my eyes.

At first, my mind was all over the place, so to quiet it, I came up with my own mantra. I don’t really know where it came from, except maybe all the Christmas music I’ve been listened to. “Joy to you, Joy to me, Joy to the World.” I repeated it in my head over and over slowly until I was simply relaxed. I was aware of house sounds around me and wanted desperately to check on the timer, but I kept my eyes closed for the full 10 minutes. And now I feel quite relaxed. I’ve heard people use meditation to control arthritis pain as well. I may have to try it again/longer. And maybe read about some methods or mantras. Or just stick with Joy.
