Day 263: New Love = Camping

This weekend was an adventure: new places, new terrain, new favorite outdoor activities. Over the course of the weekend, I rediscovered camping and hiking. I did a fair amount of camping in college but the hubs hasn’t been since childhood.

We drove up to Leelanau County in northern Michigan where our friends own a small piece of Heaven-secluded land and an old farmhouse. We camped on the land because, well, why not? And the house isn’t totally livable, though it does have running water (and good, no ghost vibes). Because the hubs and I were the last to arrive, our friends generously set up our new tent for us by the time we got there. All we had to do was blow up the air matress, lay out sleeping bags and pillows, and we were good to go.

After seeing a little of the nearest town (Empire, MI population 370) we settled into campfire, songs and dog playtime before hitting the sack. Now the hubs and I were most concerned about our dog, Elphie. Would she sleep? Or stay up growling and barking at “outdoor night noises?” We discovered that this dog was actually MADE for outdoor living. She hopped right into the tent and fell asleep on my feet, happy as a farm dog in a horse barn.

Our other big concern, with my RA, was my ability to sleep on the ground (hence the air mattress) and generally get in and out of the tent. I got into the tent ok. Getting out required a lift from the hubs-as does getting up from any low point like beach, ground, floor. This is concerning to me so I’m working on figuring out what muscles I can use and what joints I can put pressure on to get up on my own. However, I was comfy and cozy sleeping in the tent. I loved snuggling down into my sleeping bag with my husband and dog right by me. I woke up (at the actual crack of dawn due to some very energetic birds) feeling amazing and not at all stiff. Honestly I cannot wait to do it again!

Day 257: Baby Shower

Day 257 was a really special day. I, along with her friends and our mother, threw my sister a baby shower. We planned a “chic circus” theme because she told me that if she were decorate the nursery in a theme (something she says she will not do) she would choose circus. We had cake, cookies, different popcorns, mini corn dogs, cotton candy, balloons–it was lovely. Sis got a lot of stuff she needed and wanted, plus a ton of ADORABLE clothes for baby girl J. I loved that so many people gathered to celebrate the future entrance of my first niece into the world. And I got to use my fancy camera for something other than dog pics. We even did a little photo shoot with the geronimo balloons afterward, tassles made by yours truly.

Day 256: Dad Chef

Day 256 took me to Iowa to see my family. I left Chicago a little later than expected and had to deal with some bad traffic, but it was all worth it when I got to Iowa and, among other things, got to eat my dad’s cooking.

Since his children left the nest, he has had more time to experiment in the kitchen and is now the primary chef at my parents’ house. This was a sort-of make your own kabob dinner with the most flavorful and juicy chicken I have ever had, delicious grilled veggies, grilled pineapple and toasted bread with homemade (not home churned) garlic butter. I wish I had a picture, but I ate so fast I didn’t have time. I mean, it was delicious, need I say more?

Day 247: Marigold

Tonight I went to one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Chicago–Marigold. It used to live in Uptown right near the Aragon. Now it lives in Andersonville right by the fro-yo place (obviously a great location). The hubs and I have a ritual of going there with our friend John on random weeknights.

On this particular occasion, Chicago weather cooperated enough for us to sit at the big community table near the open windows and enjoy a cool beverage in the cool breeze. While the men opted for Bengali Beer, I partook in their special–Lambrusco. I discovered Lambrusco in 2008. I remember because I was interning at the Williamstown Theater Festival that summer. We sometimes went to the one fancy bar in town, for openings and other special occasions, and the bartender asked if I would like a Lambrusco. I admitted that I didn’t know what that was. “Sparkling Red” was all he had to say and I jumped all over it.

Marigold does “modern” Indian. When I asked the hubs what that meant, he said the “style” and the “preparation” was just a little more “western.” I’m not sure what that means, but it is just solid, delicious food. And the three of us have this uncanny ability to order the perfect meal, both in balance and in quantity. Tonight we got three samosas, two entree dishes, a side of rice and two orders of naan. And we devoured every bite. Literally zero leftovers. It was amazing. And delicious.

Day 246: Holding Court

On Day 246, I was “in residence” at Bar on Buena. I was there from 6:00pm to about 10:00pm meeting different people. BOB, as I have begrudgingly started calling it–at first I disliked this acronym but it is a lot easier to say–is our neighborhood place. If the hubs and I need a quick dinner but also want a good beer or outdoor seating, we go to BOB. So usually we are not there for longer than an hour. On this particular night, though, I met friend Emily. Then her hubs and my hubs joined us. Then they left and it was just my hubs and me. Then he left and friend Jana joined me. It was pretty much all social with maybe a little bit of business. (More on that later). And while the waitress may not have enjoyed opening and closing three separate bills, I sure had fun chatting, eating and drinking with a revolving door of friends.
