Day 276: Q Bros

After the first 24 hours back on methotrexate, my energy was a little low but I was up enough to go to a play. The hubs and I went to Othello the Remix created, written and performed by the Q Brothers. And I am glad we did.

The Q Brothers take Shakespeare and urbanize it by setting much of it to rap music. Sometime they keep his language and sometimes they use the story and write their own. With Othello, they set the story within hip hip culture using a combination of Shakespeare’s language and their own. Othello is an insanely popular rapper who worked his way up the ranks, Iago a member of his crew and Cassio the new “pretty boy” with a huge jump start to his career displacing Iago for the second slot. And the story goes the way we know it to from there.

Going to see Q Brothers shows, I am always excited by how diverse the audience is both in age and race. They attract an audience all their own to Shakespeare. And the people are always jazzed, sometimes clapping or bobbing along with the beat. I love this kind of energy in the theater, regardless of the criticisms I may have of the show (like the fact that no actor played Desdemona-she was an imagined/off stage character and recorded voice on a sound cue which is pretty problematic in Othello, especially the death scene). They also really engage and play well to a youth audience in a way that “straight” Shakespeare often does not.

Despite my Desdemona issue, it was a fun and satisfying new take on Othello that I’m excited has extended so many times!

Day 272: Super Moon!

The hubs and I went up to the roof deck for the FIRST TIME since it’s been warm (can that be right?) to see the Super Moon last night. It did look pretty big I guess….I mean not that much bigger than a normal full moon. But it was pretty. And romantic.

Day 268: Vegetarian?

When I was in maybe 9th grade, I decided to be a vegetarian. I mean I was already wearing band tshirts and chain necklaces, so why not? Honestly I don’t remember liking red meat much, and I was very suspicious of chicken on the bone. My photography teacher showed us a photo essay on meat processing and that pretty much sealed the deal. Since then I’ve added chicken and turkey back into my diet-because if I didn’t, I would have finished college with the record for most cheesey bread consumption.

This week, however, I have inadvertently gone back to my vegetarian ways. Monday-cereal, hummus/tomato bagel sandwich, mushroom/lobster (I’ve always eaten fish) pasta. Tuesday-cereal, berry muffin, vegan toffee bar, poblano pepper and black bean tacos. Today- cereal, hummus/tomato bagel, portabella/spinach/couscous pita. I noticed the trend today and felt pretty great about it. As an adult who is attempting to learn more about food and cook more frequently, I feel I could do a better job of eating a healthy vegetarian diet than I did as a teen. I also know that it would mean eating more fresh produce and less processed foods-the so called, “Arthritis Diet” of removing or significantly reducing inflammatory food intake.

The hubs is even sort of kind of on board, which, if you know us, is usually enough for me to run with something.

Day 265: Hike and Weekend Recap

Another thing I did not realize that I love and am fully capable of doing is hiking. We took a .75 mile hike up Empire Bluffs. Under the trees it felt like a rainforest. Up on the bluffs, the view was massive, even in fog. It felt so invigorating and rewarding to get to the top, I was worried the .75 mile back would be disappointing. Let me tell you, it was not. I loved being surrounded by nature, meeting people on the path and saying hello. The whole place and the whole trip had great vibes. Some of my pictures from the day are below, but for a way better photo recap of the entire weekend, visit this Emily Alt Photography Blog Post. She and her husband were our hosts and I just love all of the details of our Northern Michigan Getaway that she captured in her photos.

Day 264: Race Cheering, Eating, Drinking and Exploring!

I just cannot fathom how I will effectively communicate what an amazing time I had this weekend in Northern Michigan. Day 264 was a FULL day. I mean when the birds wake you up at 5:30am, you can get a lot done.

After wishing our race friends luck, the rest of us lazily got ready to greet our 5K runner, Allison, at the finish line and our Half Marathon runner, Emily, in the designated “cheering section.” We screamed as Allison finished her race. She was immediately ready for coffee and a snack. At the cheering section for the half marathon, we struck a good rhythm cheering for all the runners as they passed, though we were exceptionally loud (and obnoxious) as Emily came through. At her finish line, I managed to take this picture her husband cheering her on!

After race cheering, we went right into a hike to the beach near the property. It was short, beautiful and the dogs got to run like crazy in the sand. This beach was so quiet and private. We didn’t see anyone else the entire time.

We followed beach time with a lunch stop in Leland at the Cheese Shanty and then pressed on to the largest city in the area, Traverse City, with a downtown so cute it makes you want to drink coffee and play Jenga. Which is exactly what we did at a Brew where coffee was actually $1! From there we had cider at Left Foot Charley’s and explored Traverse City Commons on the grounds of a revolutionary, former state hospital.

20130620-233118.jpgFrom here, we tasted beers at 7 Monks before heading back to the campsite for some R and R before dinner at Art’s, another campfire and s’mores. Unfortunately the evening was cut a little short by intense thunderstorms (don’t worry, most of us slept in the house that night). This gorgeous, action-packed day left me feeling carefree and so happy to get to experience such fun things with such good people.
