Day 125: Booked It

The hubs and I booked our European getaway! This afternoon was devoted to cutting our costs since what we originally budgeted was being spent too quickly. This took a lot of research that is definitely not over, but we were able to cut our airfare costs by $1,000. We also saved on train fare between cities.

First, the airfare. We were not married to a specific itinerary so we combed the internet for various combinations of flights. Now, one thing I should probably admit is that I am a TERRIBLE flyer, so I have to have non-stop flights. It’s just something I will not compromise on. We were looking to fly into one city and out of another, which is what was making it so expensive. However, because we got married in another country last year and we have a miles credit card, we found we could actually use miles for one roundtrip, nonstop ticket from Chicago to London on United. We had to purchase our two tickets separately, one with miles and one on a card, but we then called United to link the tickets together. That way we won’t get separated if they decide to start moving seats around, though we did pay a little extra to upgrade to Economy Plus. I mean, it is an 8-9 hour flight.

This presented the problem of, how are we going to travel to a few cities when we have to start and end in the same place? So, I spent quite some time on Rail Europe, looking at maps and trying different train paths/combinations. We settled on a combination of four cities. Then it took comparing the price differences from city to city, day to day, and train company to train company. (I have a serious amount of train times/prices/routes written in a little notebook right now). Eurostar allows you to set up multiple cities in a path and compare Eurostar prices to Thalys prices (the two main train companies in the area we were looking).

Between Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels, the cheapest city to get to from London via train is Brussels. From there, we found the easiest/cheapest route–accounting for a certain number of nights in each city and how much we want to spend on hotels–is Brussels to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Paris, and Paris back to London. This includes two cities I’ve been to (London and Paris) and two I haven’t (Brussels and Amsterdam). And the hubs, while very well traveled in other continents, has not been to any. We’ll spend one night in London after our arrival and then off to Brussels. Three nights there, two in Amsterdam, two in Paris and two more in London before heading back to the U.S.

A few things about this:

1. Train tickets are more affordable if you buy them in advance in a locked schedule (meaning no changing your mind last minute). While this does put some pressure on travelers to “get there on time,” the savings are quite significant. Many flexible tickets are at least $30 more per person, and when you are taking four trains, that adds up.

2. Train tickets are often cheaper from Eurostar or Thalys themselves so after I compared everything on Rail Europe, I actually purchased on their websites. Eurostar is very user friendly while Thalys is a bit more antiquated and only takes PayPal from the U.S.

3. This may seem like a lot in ten days, but–and if you’ve traveled to Europe you know–the cities are so close together and the train stations are in the actual cities, often very close to the center of town. The longest train we have is three and a half hours, and that’s from Amsterdam to Paris. The other three are all two hours or less. Good for napping and making a plan of attack for the next city!

4. Yes, I am worried about getting tired and not being able to walk as much as I would like. The hubs and I are both fully aware that we may have some early nights, late mornings, and days spent sitting in cafes. I will have to lug around medicine and limit my alcohol consumption. BUT I do not want to let all that stop me from going on what promises to be an amazing trip.

5. I love a good itinerary.

Probably my favorite part about how the trip works out is that on our actual one-year wedding anniversary, we will wake up in Paris and go to sleep in London. If that’s not romantic, I don’t know what is.

Now, we have to pick hotels and prioritize everything we want to do!

Day 124: Painting the Walls Black

Our entryway is narrow and white. We have an old, ugly bookshelf that holds mail, photos and Elphie’s personal items and a mat for shoes. This hall also has the furnace closet and a coat closet, so there is not much we can change about the space and how it works. Other than paint a chalkboard wall!

One small wall sticks out a little and thus is the perfect spot for updates from the dog walker, cute loves notes, inside jokes and maybe a doodle or two. The hubs is very kind and offered to do it all himself so that I would not over-exert myself. But I really wanted to paint some (you can see the proof below) and it probably doesn’t count as my fun thing if I don’t participate. We painted the first and second coats very easily and now just have to wait three days before we can write on it.

I’m wondering if it might also be cute to get some wood cut and frame it out like a picture…thoughts?

Day 118: Closet Monster

After working what should be my final weekend, box office shift, I had an urge to purge. I’d been warning the hubs that we need to organize and clean our closets soon, and it happened today.

When I first moved in to his condo, the hubs had an Elfa closet from The Container Store installed so that we could both share the long narrow closet in the master bedroom. In order for all the shelves, bars and drawers to fit, we had to remove the bi-fold doors. “No worry,” we said. “Everything will look so nice because of the Elfa organization, we won’t need doors.” His side managed to stay that way (all he has are suits and dress shirts), but mine ended up looking a mess.

But after spending some quality time being honest about how much I wear a lot of items, it now looks much nicer. Not only did we fill up two garbage bags full of clothes to sell/donate, we also went through all of our drawers and our coat closet. Everything is organized and neat. I even dusted the shelves! And I feel so much better.

Sometimes happiness comes from an organized environment. I know, many times, I’ve sat down to do other work and just can’t when the space I’m in feels messy or cluttered. Taking the time to keep things nice just feels better!

Compare and contrast.

This is my half of the closet. It might not look extremely different, but I promise there is less of everything. And the drawers look amazing.

Day 117: Double Feature

The plan for today was to take in a double feature, the 4:35pm showing of Silver Linings Playbook and then the 7:35pm showing of Argo. The hubs and I are on a quest to see the Oscar nominated movies. We made it to our favorite theater (Cinemark in Evanston-yeah we like our movie theaters like we like our Chillis, suburban) in time for Silver Linings Playbook.

I really liked this movie. It had the structure of a romantic comedy, yet the depth and sensitivity of a story about a young man’s struggle with mental illness. I found this combination fascinating and moving. The writer/director continued to turn the world over and over, often making the viewer, at least me, feel as unstable as the characters within it.

When we got out, it was getting close to 7pm. Instead of just sneaking in to the other theater for Argo like most people, we left to go buy tickets. And it was SOLD OUT. I can’t remember the last time I tried to go to a movie that had been out and it was sold out! The lesson, though, is that if we would have snuck in, we probably would have gotten caught. Eek.

Instead, we drove home, got Indian take out, and planned to watch another movie. Or maybe just DVR. But the intent for a double feature was there. And I’m sure it would have been really fun. Anyway, I’m glad we saw Silver Linings Playbook and got to eat Indian food.

Day 115: ENFJ

A couple of days ago, I saw a post on another blog I read, {very loveleigh} (written by a Michigan teacher who makes amazing knitted scarves) that mentioned the Jung Typology Test. I’ve taken it once before when a friend of mine was obsessed with making everyone around her take it. When the hubs and I took it tonight, I think I got the exact same thing: ENFJ

Extroverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, Judging. Like Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, Oprah, Peyton Manning, Michael Jordan, Diane Sawyer, and, obviously the character of Joe Hackett from Wings.

The hubs is ESTJ: Extroverted, Sensing, Thinking, Judging. Like J.D. Rockefeller, Bette Davis, Harry Truman, and The Mayor from The Music Man.

We could have paid $6 to find out our compatibility, but we decided that would not be necessary. Instead, we had fun analyzing the descriptions for our types. Seriously, its fun. Post yours below!
