Day 305, 306 & 307: An Iowa Weekend

Day 305
The hubs and I drove to Iowa with a car FULL of garage sale items. I mean it was packed. The entire trunk and back seat up to the ceiling held old blankets, extra pots and pans, and clothes. Oh, the clothes.

Day 306
I might have written about this before, but I love a good garage sale. The early morning rush, the continued merchandising, slashing prices, doughnuts, and sitting around all morning with my sister chatting it up. The. Best.

Also, the hubs and brought our bikes and, after the garage sale, rode the Greenbelt path from Madcreek to the highway.

Day 307
On the way back to Chicago, we made a detour to see my grandmother to discuss our upcoming birthday. OK our birthday is in January but it is on the same day and it is a big birthday (30 and 90!) so we have some planning to do.

We also did a quick stop in Iowa City so I could show the hubs all the cool places I used to go in high school after I was allowed to drive out of town. A fun Iowa day-and weekend-for sure.

Day 302, 303 & 304: Super Busy Times

This was a pretty busy work and social week. Here’s the skinny:

Day 302

I was off for much of the afternoon and spent it in residence at my favorite neighborhood coffee shop, Dollop! There I saw Taylor and Justin (separately though I bet they would like to be friends too) and we caught up on each other’s lives.

Day 303

The People’s Temple–a documentary theatre piece about the notorious religious organization of the same name performed by extremely talented CPS high schoolers. It was amazing, educational, moving, and beautiful. Student work can be fantastic!

Day 304

We had a work event in the burbs surrounding the musical Hair. I wore a daisy in mine and helped make the event a success for the theatre!

Day 300: Ideal Day

Day 300 is a momentous day to reach on this journey. While I have not been the best at posting every day recently (or sometimes I’ve been posting maaany different days at once) I have been having so much fun.

Today the hubs and I had brunch with friends with kids (and one ready to give birth any day now). We rode our bikes to Hollywood Beach to meet up with a visiting friend, a new friend and more friends with kids. We made it home judt before the rain started. Then we had Sunday Dinner with still other friends (and one lovely repeat). It was an ideal day filled with friends, physical activity, sun, beach, children and love. And fun.

Day 299: John’s Place and Volo

My friend Natalie came to town! She, Jana and I had dinner at John’s Place in Roscoe Village before meeting up with a few people–including some new friends–on the adorable patio at Volo for drinks. Catching up with people is one of my favorite things!

Day 291: The Cook’s House

On Day 291, the hubs and I had an amazing meal at The Cook’s House in Traverse City. We found a place to stay on AirBnB–an over the garage studio just south west of down town. We were able to walk right over to the restaurant, which looks, in fact, like a cook’s house.

Outside a few steps lead up to the porch and through the open front door into what would have been someone’s living room. Instead a woman behind a tiny bar greets us and motions us to a table by the big bay window overlooking the porch. There are a few tables inside with an open view into the kitchen. Cookbooks line the shelves along with wine glasses and alcohols. And if you are lucky enough to sit by the kitchen, you have full access to the chef for conversation while he prepares your meal. It is so cozy, I imagine the chefs just going upstairs after service for a glass of wine and goodnight.

We were sitting near the door–which was good because I don’t think they had A/C–in full view of the kitchen and earshot of the lively conversation he was having with the table nearest him. At one point, a sous chef left the kitchen, through the restaurant and out the front door, to pick some herbs from the garden and then put them in a salad or on a fish. We enjoyed a fresh, farm-to-table five course tasting dinner in this relaxed and fun environment. A definite must go if you are in Northern Michigan!
