Day 86: Bookclub Part One

Recently, I was invited to start a bookclub with some of my friends and tonight we had our first meeting to organize our year of reading. Two people came up with the idea. They invited three people to join them (this is where I came in) and each of the five of us invited an outside person that the others did not know well. Six of the ten people gathered to organize, going over dates, rules or “norms” as we called them, and, obviously, book choices.

I’m super jazzed about the list we came up with because it has a good balance of fiction and non-fiction with one classic and one play! We are starting with The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and will continue with the following list in an uncertain order:

Medusa’s Gaze and Vampire Bites: The Science of Monsters by Matt Kaplan
The Round House by Louise Erdrich
The Swerve: How the World Became Modern by Stephen Greenblatt
The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disapeared by Jonas Jonasson
Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route by Saidiya Hartman
The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard (this is the play!)
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Moloka’i by Alan Brennert

I will post again with more about how meetings are structured and how it goes after the first book. It was so fun to plan and realize that if we want to pursue something academic or creative, sometimes we just have to ask people and get started. I’ll probably go download The Night Circus now and get started!

Day 85: Work Holiday Celebration

It’s my second photobooth in four days! And while I still want to write a photbooth focused post, today is not the day. Because our work holiday party was out of control. Not only did we have a photobooth, open bar and what seemed like an endless supply of fried food and sweets at 3:00 in the afternoon, but also a video produced by the staff featuring many different departments. (Yours truly even made an appearance). Not to mention the bake-off and cake walk with all kinds of prizes from cake to theater tickets to flavored vodka.

It was a fun way for large staff to all get together to celebrate. Now, some of us are back at work, until the shows start this evening.

Day 84: Socked Feet

Busy day full of fun so I didn’t really have time for a guilty pleasure. One thing did make me giggle like a school girl, however, and that was sliding around on our hardwood floor in my socked feet. It happened accidentally. I hugged my husband and kind of started to slide. He caught me and I got the idea that he should push me down the hall. So I leaned all my weight on him and off we went much to my delight. These super fuzzy and super cute socks from my Secret Santa definitely helped!

Day 83: Real Simple?

I’m on a quest to find a new magazine! Well, ok, today at Target, I saw a Real Simple magazine that boasted “A Year of Organized Living” and the best body lotions, winter soups, vacuum cleaners and white shirts. Naturally, I was intrigued.

I took my time looking through each section. Turns out, Real Simple covers a variety of complex topics like beauty, money, cooking and home and attempts to simplify them. I liked sections that covered random things like ways to unwind before bed that included several examples from many different people or what to do with old christmas lights (put battery powered ones in a mason jar for a cute nightlight). The sections on money (how to get a raise and a sad story about a couple losing their house) and health (here’s the definition of some of those clinical words your doctor uses) were not my favorite. I guess there was nothing wrong with them. I just wasn’t interested in the information. My favorite section was the cooking section. All of the food looked and sounded delicious, especially those winter soups (chickpea, vegetable and pesto; spicy chicken and hominy; curried squash).

As a teen I read things like Teen Beat and Seventeen Magazine. Today I subscribe to HGTV Magazine and the hubs gets The Atlantic. In between, I’ve been in to Cosmopolitan, Vogue, New York Magazine, Time, Mental Floss, Paste, and the occasional People when flying. Nothing of great substance, and I, for the most part, intend to keep it that way. However, I think would appreciate another magazine to inspire me to continue making changes to our home, cook more, or generally live better/happier. I’m just not sure Real Simple is the one for me..

Day 82: Vinejoy

If you like wine, parties and cool people and you don’t know Vinejoy, you are sorely missing out on some of the best independently made wines and super fun parties ever. I mean it. Ever. Not only do these two dudes bring the best craft wines of California’s Central Coast to Chicago’s independent wine shops (like In Fine Spirits, City Provisions, A. Vision Chicago, Que Syrah, etc.), but they also do special events, weddings, and tastings throughout the city.

Probably the most fun event they spearhead is their monthly potluck held in various spaces throughout Chicago. I’ve been to a few different ones-in a bakery, an artist’s loft, and the Vinejoy Offices. Each potluck features a food item (goat cheese, leeks, bacon, vegetables, etc.). Every person attending contributes $20 and a dish containing the featured item. (The money goes towards the basically unlimited amount of wine Vinejoy supplies these parties with). Everyone votes (in a creative way-I won’t spoil it) for their favorite food item and that person wins a bottle of wine. If that wasn’t enough, I always meet the most interesting people at these parties. Its like these guys are magnets for talented, cool, smart, groovy people.

Tonight I went to a special potluck for frequent attendees where the food was not a specific item but your “signature dish.” I made pumpkin bars, of course, and the hubs brought mini tuna melts that WON the favorite dish! Other highlights included mini chicken pot pies and mac and cheese. Aside from the good food, fun people and tv playing a VHS of The NeverEnding Story, they also had a photobooth curtesy of Emily Alt Photography. (Hopefully someday I’ll be able to have a whole blog post dedicated to a photobooth). Needless to say, we had a great time.

If any of this sounds fun to you, or you just want to know more about them, sign up for their mailing list here. Maybe I’ll see you at their next fun event?
