Day 71: Bedroom Makeover

I love a made bed full of pillows. If you saw our bedroom every morning you might not believe this but it’s true. Yet there is one thing that motivates me to make the bed and that is new bedding!

This fun day has been many weeks in the making. I ordered bedding weeks ago and it immediately went on back order. Since then it has been slowly arriving piece by piece. But the final important part, the duvet cover, arrived today. And now our bed looks like this.

All this bedding-euro shams, regular shams, duvet cover and quilt-is from West Elm. I used all pillows we had and the big gray pillows in back are ones we’ve had for a while. It’s already Elphie approved!

Day 70: Bongo Room

Guilty Pleasure Monday today was brunch with a friend at the Bongo Room. If you live in Chicago and are not familiar with the Bongo Room, you must go. Known for their indulgent breakfast items, this popular brunch spot recently opened their Andersonville location, where we ate today. I’ve been to the Wicker Park location before, and on the weekend the wait is normally about two hours during prime brunch time (and they do not take reservations). However at 1:00p.m. on a Monday, we had no problem. Because it was Guilty Pleasure Monday, I ordered the white chocolate caramel pretzel pancakes. Three huge-like bigger than my face-pancakes were delivered to the table. My friend had some kind if savory pork sandwich that he said was great. (Apparently he was not having guilty pleasure food). But back to my pancakes, pretzel filled and covered in caramel and white chocolate sauces, these pancakes were not the crazy sugar rush they could have been, which was a welcome surprise. They were nicely sweet and crunchy but not overly so. I managed to eat about one third of the plate. They were SO big. And SO yummy!

Day 69: White Elephant

Driving back from Iowa in time to work at noon was not so fun. Going to a white elephant party after work, however, was super fun. White elephant can be done many ways but, the way I have always played (and the way we played last night) the rules are:

  • Bring anything you own that is funny, unwanted, used, dorky, etc.
  • Wrap it but do not put any kind of tag on it.
  • At the party, put all the presents in one place. Then everyone draws a number.
  • The person who drew number one gets to pick a present and open it.
  • The person who drew number two can steal from number one or open a new present and so on until the last person goes.
  • A present cannot be stolen more than two or three times (depending on how many people you have).
  • If your present is stolen you may either open a new one or steal a different one.
  • This goes on until all presents have been opened, at which point the person who drew number one gets to make one last steal if he/she desires, ending the game.

We did this with seven people so it did not take that long. (I started this as a tradition for my extended family on my mom’s side with about 20 people and that takes a while). I gave a martini glass picture frame with picture of Elphie’s face in it (somehow the hubs ended up with this, so watch out family) and I got two books that are going straight to the garage sale pile. The game was definitely fun but seeing friends was better. These are friends that we, unfortunately, do not see too often but with whom we can always pick right back up.

Side note: I do not have any pictures from tonight because I totally forgot about writing the blog while I was there. This has happened before and I think it is because I am enjoying myself so much I’m not thinking about writing about it later. This is good but now I’m sad that I don’t have any photos to share. I’m looking for a happy medium between being conscious of documenting these events and just have fun.

Day 68: A Visit

The hubs and I are in Iowa this weekend so we decided to have dinner and a visit with my grandma. I’ve already posted about how great she is, so I’ll just say here that is was so nice to see her! Highlights include her telling me how this blog perks her up when she’s feeling down (she doesn’t have the Internet but my mom prints my posts and takes them to her), the hubs taking care of everything in the kitchen (so nice) and Grandma reminiscing about the past (as a response to my questioning). She told me that my grandpa told her before they were married that she would always have roses. He kept his word, and every time they moved, which was a lot, he planted a rose bush right away so she could always have them. Now that he has passed away, she keeps roses in the house because “it’s the least I can do for him.”

I love that I now know this amazingly sweet detail about their relationship I might not have heard about otherwise. I’m lucky to have this time with her when I’m old enough to really be curious about her life and our family’s history. Truly, this is a highly recommended activity.

Day 67: Bakon Craze

So bacon has become really popular. Like it’s everywhere. Or maybe it was always popular but now, due to social media crazes, it’s more acceptable for people with this obsession with meat to share it with the rest of the world. Regardless, you can now find bacon wrapped around other meats, on cupcakes, even made in to a edible salad bowl. Not to mention all the other products–bacon chapstick, bacon band aids, bacon purses–the list goes on and on.

Last night, I participated in this craze by trying bacon flavored vodka, called Bakon. In this picture, these women may be giving the thumbs up, but let me tell you, it was a thumbs down. It smelled terrible and tasted worse. The fun part about it was watching people’s reactions to trying it. I wish I had pictures of that! Dear Bacon Obsessed People, you have gone too far.
