Day 56: Ikea

Guilty Pleasure Monday today = a trip to Ikea! While I know this is the furthest thing from a pleasure for many people, I love it. I like strolling through the entire store from start to finish, looking at all the furniture and decor, deciding if I think I can cover picture frames with the fabric from a bedspread or if it makes sense that a regular human can put all these items together using nothing but a crank, all while eating a cinnamon roll. It’s the best.

When I shop alone, I inevitably take forever, like roam through sections totally aimlessly and make decisions at a glacial pace forever. Today was no different. I took my time and thought about things, rather than making rash decisions or purchases. I sat down several times to keep my feet well rested and came to the conclusion that while I could use a bedspread to cover picture frames, I might find a better deal on fabric at a place like JoAnn’s. I did, however, decide that I need a shoe rack to contain the mess that is my husband’s shoes and two side tables that Young House Love assures me I can make in to a headboard. (It’s one project that is in the book and not on the website).

Ikea makes it pretty easy to get items in to a car, but I’m waiting for the hubs to get home to bring those items up to our place. The headboard may end up with its own separate post. Wish me happy building!

Day 55: For the love of crown molding

How do you follow up a day so fun you didn’t even have time to post, you ask? With doing something so out of my norm that even my husband felt ambushed when I told him what we had an appointment to do at 11am this morning.

Let me back up. Two days ago, while walking Elphie in an unexplored part of our neighborhood, I fell in love with a street. Yes, a street. Alta Vista is one block long running north/south between Byron and Grace. One block west is Seminary and one block east is Kenmore. All the homes–row houses–were built between 1900 and 1904 and are historically protected. You can’t build up or out and you certainly cannot knock down. When Elphie and I walked up this street, aside from the gorgeous houses, we saw beautiful doors and entryways piled with strollers and shoes, one man walking a boxer and two women cleaning their respective front stoops and chatting. It was an urban Our Town unfolding right in front of our eyes.

And wouldn’t you know, two of these majestic houses had for sale signs out front? Except that one said “under contract,” so I focused on the other–the one on the corner lot, facing east. I immediately went home, looked up the listing, and contacted the agent to find out about any future open houses. Well wouldn’t you know it? She’s showing it all weekend and would we like to stop by around 11am on Sunday? Yes ma’am we would.

That night at dinner, I told the hubs about our appointment. This resulted in a long conversation about money, planning and how there was 0% chance we would buy this place unless it was still for sale in 2014 when we can actually afford to look, or something. BUT he agreed that we should still go see it as long as I did not get my heart set on it, so this morning we went. And looked. And loved. Well I loved. It has gorgeous hardwood floors, amazing old details like crown molding, built-ins, and chandeliers, new heat and a/c units, a finished basement, walk-in closet, etc. Things it does not have that the hubs highlighted: a master bathroom, open floor plan, a yard and parking.

Ok, so it’s not the dream home and we can’t afford it right now anyway. Seeing it did force us to talk about what we each want in a home and solidified for both of us that we do want a house in the city when we can afford to move (as opposed to a condo in the city or a house in suburbs. We want it all). He may want more new and modern while I lean more towards old and charming. He thinks of practical things like money and function while I think more about feeling and decor. But I think that makes us a great pair and will lead us to the perfect home (in 2014).

Day 54: FunDay

Some days are just great, and on those days I have a hard time picking one thing as THE fun thing I did that day. Here’s what my Saturday looked like yesterday (and why I did not post anything until now):

10am-DIY Trunk Show with husband and friend from work.
12pm-begin a quiet afternoon at work filled with mad libs and online holiday shopping.
6pm-dinner reservations at a downtown restaurant.
8pm-tickets to Potted Potter at the Broadway Playhouse.
10pm-game night with best friends.

So you can see why it would be hard to choose. I feel lucky to have had such a great day wherein nothing about my arthritis stopped me from doing what I wanted and having the best time.

Day 53: Wish List

Every year, my immediate family makes Christmas wish lists. These have evolved from my sister and I going through the JC Penny’s Catalogue and circling everything we want from the toy section, to adult lists sent via email complete with links to websites where gifts can be purchased. It works for us, and every year I am excited to make my list. But when I start thinking about it (which is usually in October when my mother starts asking for one) I never know where to begin. I don’t like to put the same kinds of things every year whereas I could probably copy my husband’s exactly from last year: ties, dress shirts, one electronic device, the end.

Tonight, at dinner, we talked and talked about what we want, even letting things get a little out of hand–a European vacation, new furniture, my mom to repaint all the rooms in our condo (seriously she’s super good at it), a new house, a vacation house, another dog (maybe that one was just me), etc.  While those things are fun to fantasize about, I ended up going with a stand mixer, leggings and some fun group/party games. All super fun things that could end up with their own blog post.

Honestly, though, I get more excited about shopping for my family when I get their lists. ‘Tis the season!
