Day 245: Meal Crew

Memorial Day! After recovering from my tiredness, sickness, blah-ness, I had a full Memorial Day that balanced working on a grant proposal with quality friend time. I had lunch and dinner with the same friends–we just took a break in the middle for everyone to do some catching up on work, errands, cleaning, all that stuff that seems to accumulate.

It felt a little like college, in a great way, when I saw my friends for meals and each was continuation of the last in terms of conversation and ease. It’s pretty great to have friends like this. I mean how many people actually want to hang out multiple times a day?

Day 244: R and R

Ok Day 244 is the day we drove back to Chicago from Grand Haven on Memorial Day weekend. It really was not that fun of a day if I’m being totally honest. I did not get a lot of sleep and as a result felt sick and tired the whole day. Plus I was under deadline for a grant proposal.

As soon as we got home, I started working. Our friends who could not make the trip invited everyone over that evening, but I was feeling too rundown and stressed so I stayed home while the hubs went to have a little more fun. I stopped working, laid on the couch, and instead of watching reality TV and feeling sorry for myself because I was sick and tired and sore, I felt good about all that I had done over the weekend. It was well-deserved and much-needed rest instead of the old, sad rest. I probably watched reality TV, but I can guarantee that I did not feel bad about it!

Day 243: Pronto Pup

I can’t believe it is almost Labor Day and I am writing a post about Memorial Day weekend. The bookends of summer. I am glad I can say my summer was so full, I had no time to write but am sad about how far behind I am.

We were at the cottage in Grand Haven, MI celebrating the start of summer with friends and, on this day, I had my first pronto pup (a special corn dog). Remember this is before pescetarianism but I definitely wasn’t eating pork. However they’ve been a staple for others whenever we’ve been in GH and I was on vacation and our friends did bring a lot back to the cottage that would otherwise have gone to waste so I figured why not. And it was out of control. I haven’t had a hot dog in so long, I had forgotten about that taste, but nestled inside a crunchy house of corn. I mean come on. Woo.

I am sad I didn’t go to the stand myself to see the line and read the sign, “This is cholesterol COUNTRY. Health addicts please continue on and have a nice day”

But maybe I’ll make it down there next weekend for Labor Day.

Day 242: Dogs, Dogs All Kinds of Dogs. In the Bed.

Waking up at the Cottage is always a game of who else is up? Is it time to get up? Oh shoot, did I oversleep? At least I always think about that as a guest in someone else’s house. This time, we didn’t have any questions about whether people were up or not. Little Stella dog came and let us know that people were up and made herself at home in our bed with Elphie, who was only a little bit jealous.

Oh, and then this happened.

And this.

Day 241: Crafts!

Memorial Day weekend! Ever since I started dating the hubs, I’ve been going to The Cottage–a friend’s mother’s lakeside cottage in Grand Haven, MI–for Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. This year we drove up on Thursday afternoon to make the most of our long weekend.

Because we generally go to The Cottage on holidays, the group is never the same. This Memorial Day two new friends came who had never been before. One, Allison, in true art teacher form, brought a craft for us to complete as a group. She had an impressive craft box full of paper, glitter, beads, twine, glue, scissors, and other fun stuff.

Then she taught us to make origami boxes. That’s pretty cool. I’ve never made them before, but, the super fun part, she had us decorate the tops with different gold beads giving the boxes a fun, 80’s vibe. Here’s mine:
