Day 221: The Hire

Recently, I posted that I was interviewing a bunch of people for an apprentice position. Well today I was able to offer it to someone, and it was so satisfying to make that call. She was excited and ready to jump right on board.

I’m hiring these kind of positions every six months and, at first, I questioned how I would be able to find someone good each time. Now I’m realizing that each new person will come in with energy and enthusiasm that could help rejuvenate the rest of my department. Obviously they must meet other qualifications as well, but I’m noticing and appreciating the enthusiasm more.

Day 220: Walk Progress Part 2

Thursdays are my write-from-home day for work. I love writing from home because I actually find it less distracting than the office. I can also take a break for an Elphie training walk. I’m so proud of my progress: since last week I’ve taken almost two minutes off of my average minute per mile pace. It is down from 17:51 to 16. I went 2.2 miles in 35 minutes, 8 seconds. Ready to take on the arthritis walk in 2 weeks!

Day 219: Office Space

Wednesdays at work consist of meetings all day. Because it was actually nice, I had all of my meetings outside!

To my knowledge, this not something that happens at many places of work. Yet, it refreshes the mind. Sitting in the sun, appreciating the cool breeze promotes positive thinking. Instead of working at my desk wishing I was enjoying the weather, I’m enjoying the weather while working. It’s the best! (Except maybe when you then get a weird arm sunburn because you’re wearing a professional work blazer).

Day 218: FroYo

FroYo was last summer’s hottest dessert trend and I am excited that so many places have remained in business over Chicago’s extended winter. Tonight was the perfect night to take a stroll through Andersonville while eating FroYo from Forever Yogurt.

Self-serve in many delicious flavors with rows and rows of optional toppings (you pay by weight, not variety of items), I mean, what could be better? I went with cake batter under dark chocolate which I then covered in graham cracker crumbs. Usually I go for a little Cap’n Crunch on top, but I decided to try the brownie bites. (They are not as good, so I’ll stick with the CC next time). The hubs went healthier with traditional vanilla covered in fruit and peanuts. Ok, fine, he also had some salted caramel popcorn flavor that wasn’t all that tasty. I was hoping to try their thin mint–I’ve only heard amazing rumors about it–but they didn’t have it today. So I’ll probably have to go again. Very soon.

Oh, I’m just glad it’s finally Spring and I can eat delicious cold desserts out of doors!

Day 217: Netflix on the Gym TVs

I discovered something amazing today–I can connect my phone to the individual machine TVs at the gym and play Netflix! I intended to do a quick 20 minutes on the elliptical and be on my merry way, but this discovery led to 40 minutes on the recumbent bike spent watching the first episode of Revenge.

Watching cable on the machines is great but I always found myself getting antsy during the commercials, wishing time would go faster. Watching a dramatic show I’ve never seen before with no commercials kept me totally engaged through a workout twice as long as I usually spend on a gym machine. Granted the recumbent bike is not as strenuous as the elliptical but I think I can allow myself this gentler workout once a week. It’s a new guilty pleasure!
