Day 146: Thin Mints

I’ve finally decided to move Guilty Pleasure Day to Sunday. And that’s because, today, there were young ladies selling delicious cookies outside of Trader Joe’s. After an outrageous night of 90’s dance party and an early morning of workshop rehearsal, all I wanted was a nap. But I could not resist their smiles and promises of chocolate and mint together in the most perfect of unions.

Now, Thin Mints are best served cold (I prefer refrigerator over freezer) but my impatience got the best of me. I immediately ate like 10 and then slept for 2 hours. Pretty good for the first Guilty Pleasure Sunday.

Day 133: The Bachelor

All of my guilty pleasures are either food or tv. I accept this fact. I have been watching The Bachelor since high school. I remember watching it with my mom back when Jesse Palmer was on.

While I used to believe that these people found love-hey Trista and Ryan are still together-I now enjoy it for the large dose of drama. Definitely guilty pleasure material on a Monday night.

Day 129: Agnes

I rush home after a half day at work to meet Agnes, a petite woman who is going to “make miracles” in my home. She is buzzing from the front gate at the very moment I am coming in. She only brings a few items with her; rags, flip flops and a bucket. She asks how many bathrooms I have. After I point her in the right direction, I settle in at the dining table for some work from home and don’t see Agnes again for a couple hours. The only proof that she is actually there is an occasional bang or the sound of running water.

After three hours, she emerges to kick me out of the living/dining area. I have since quit my work and am watching How I Met Your Mother, feeling like instead of watching television, I should be helping Agnes. When I go back to the master bed/bath, my jaw drops. It is immaculate, sparkling, shiny and new.

Another hour passes and I decide to check on her. She is under the dining table cleaning who knows how much dog hair from the underside of the table. There is a PILE of dog bones on Elphie’s bed that she could only have found in awful abandoned places like under the couch and beneath the stove. I slowly back out of the room, unable to interrupt the master at work.

In total Agnes spends almost five hours cleaning our two bedroom, two bath condo. We’ve had “cleaning services” come before. They spend no more than two hours cleaning and charge twice what Agnes asks for. This lady is amazing and she made my day by making my home look better and cleaner than I could ever hope to.

Day 112: Ah, Reading

Guilty Pleasure Monday was just that today. I relaxed, did some online shopping, some casual cleaning and, when I’m done writing this, I will watch the latest episode of Downton Abbey.

The most relaxing thing about today so far, though, has been reading. I do enjoy reading for pleasure but don’t often make it a priority. One might think that, as someone, who often has to spend a lot of time resting, that I read all the time. Unfortunately, one would be wrong. But I’m turning it around-we have our first book club meeting in a few weeks and I’ve already finished the book!

When I first joined the book club, I thought the goal of reading one book per month might be lofty for me as I tend to take a slower pace (I’ve been reading the five Game of Thrones books for almost a year now). Yet, as soon as I finished the book for this month, I found myself yearning for another. Thankfully, my friend gave me a book she thought I would like, Wolf Hall. I’ve only just started this historical drama about Henry VIII told from Thomas Cromwell’s point of view, but I already love the language. There’s just nothing like curling up in a warm blanket on a big couch with a good book.

Day 105: Caramel Cone

Guilty Pleasure Monday lives on! I may need it less and less because I guess I’m getting used to the methotrexate. It no longer makes me feel so tired or ill throughout the day on Monday. Yet I find I can still use the guilty pleasure pick-me-up and today it’s Caramel Cone ice cream made by Haagen Das.

Two things about this ice cream: it’s organic (read full fat). It’s delicious: vanilla ice cream with bits of chicolate covered sugar cone and caramel swirls. I used to have a serious addiction to this ice cream. Not a summer day passed without me eating Caramel Cone, but I’m over that now. It’s become a guilty pleasure only acceptable once in a great while. Today I enjoyed some of the pint, not all. And will continue to enjoy it over the next few days but then no more. Until summer. Or maybe Valentine’s Day.
