Day 322: Goodbye, Hello

Ok. Remember a while ago I posted about things to come…so one of the things was, obviously, the birth of my niece. The other is the announcement that I am working with Emily Alt Photography as the bookkeeper and creative consultant! I just really dig everything Emily and her husband are doing and want to be apart of it, even if I can’t go out on the road in the airstream (or can I?)

In case you did not know, Emily and Ian have quit their day jobs to pursue photography full-time and have serious plans to travel the country with their dog(s?) and cameras. On Day 321, we said goodbye to them as they packed up their Northside condo and moved to Michigan in search of adventures in airstreams, photography and self-employment. They just announced an AMAZING offer in some seriously RAD cities, so if you are planning on getting married in or looking to elope to Minneapolis, Austin, Asheville, Beaufort, New Orleans, Santa Fe, or Traverse City, check this out. Now. Like immediately. The rest of this post is not as important as you reading about the Pop Up Rolling Elopements.

And in case you don’t subscribe to her emails (why wouldn’t you? they are full of great offers!) here is the announcement that went out about my involvement: “Hey! I’m Sarah and I’m super jazzed to be working with my talented friends, Emily and Ian. As they venture out on the road, I’ll be keeping the books in Chicago and writing blog posts about anything from urban DIY photo art to utopian societies to pescetarianism. Theater, a husband, and a mini-goldendoodle named Elphaba occupy much of my time, yet I like to think of myself as an amateur photographer, musician and traveler. Even though I am a native Iowan and current Illinoisan, the northwest mitten state has stolen my heart. I enjoy long walks on her peaceful Lake Michigan beaches, hikes to the top of Empire Bluffs and drives through The Narrows–obviously the most beautiful place on Earth.” (Ridiculous I know, but also true).

For real, I am sad to see my friends leave Chicago but so so happy for their success, inspired by their bravery and awed by their art!

Day 314: Roadtrip Day 4

The wedding began later in the day, so the hubs and I took advantage of our surroundings. Well…first…we tried a bike ride but my little one speeder could not handle the hills of Idaho. So, we went into town and took a gondola up to the top of Bald Mountain where we took pictures of the beautiful surroundings and tried not to run out of breath (altitude).

Next we took in a rehearsal for the local orchestra. They rehearse in the outdoor amphitheater, so it is free for anyone who wants to watch. The hubs commented how great it was to hear live orchestral music–something we will definitely need to pursue in Chicago. After that, paddle boating on a small lake with our friends, Parvesh and Gregory. There we dared each other to go under the bridge that was “off limits” to paddle boaters.

Then, after all that, THE WEDDING! It was a Jewish ceremony that modernized some of the traditions to include women and non-Jewish family and friends. Everything was beautiful–the location (nestled in the mountains), the dress (classy, modern, and sleek), and the love between the happy couple (10 years together, multiple cities and jobs that kept them apart). Oh, and a Hora like you’ve never seen! So fun.

Day 313: Roadtrip Day 3

Another 12 hour drive and three more states! Leaving Colorado, we drove through Wyoming and Utah to get to Sun Valley, Idaho, our destination for wedding fun. It was on this drive that the landscape really changed. The hubs and I kept saying things like, “It looks like another planet!” and “Look how FAR you can see. There’s just NOTHING.”

Honestly, I had never seen land like this in my life. It was beautiful. I just kept imagining cowboys driving cattle across miles and miles of untouched land, eating food over a fire and sleeping under the open sky. I was literally gaping the entire 12 hours.

Immediately upon arrival in Sun Valley, we spruced up and headed to a welcome dinner for all the far traveling guests. Sun Valley was a special place to the groom growing up and he and his bride agreed that it was the perfect place for their wedding. Their welcome dinner featured loving speeches from friends, childhood stories from family and local mustards and vintage postcards as favors. A lot of love and happiness in the air for the almost-wed couple!

Day 312: Roadtrip Day 2

The first 12 hour day. We listened to much of the book, discussed plans for alternating driving, playing games, sleeping and just getting through the day. Through the cornfields of Iowa, the plains of Nebraska and finally into the mountains of Colorado, we made excellent time. Actually we were so quick, we surprised our generous host Tony by arriving one hour early!

Did I mention Tony is a great host? He played Journey for us as we walked through the door. He drove us all over Denver giving a great tour, took us out to an amazing dinner with view overlooking downtown and the mountains, talked religion and politics with no fights and sent us off at 5:30am with bellies full of cereal, coffee, and fruit. The. Best. Host.

Denver made quite the good impression on the hubs and I-we would love to get back and do some real exploring of the city’s adorable downtown and sunset views of the Rocky’s.

Day 302, 303 & 304: Super Busy Times

This was a pretty busy work and social week. Here’s the skinny:

Day 302

I was off for much of the afternoon and spent it in residence at my favorite neighborhood coffee shop, Dollop! There I saw Taylor and Justin (separately though I bet they would like to be friends too) and we caught up on each other’s lives.

Day 303

The People’s Temple–a documentary theatre piece about the notorious religious organization of the same name performed by extremely talented CPS high schoolers. It was amazing, educational, moving, and beautiful. Student work can be fantastic!

Day 304

We had a work event in the burbs surrounding the musical Hair. I wore a daisy in mine and helped make the event a success for the theatre!
