Day 243: Pronto Pup

I can’t believe it is almost Labor Day and I am writing a post about Memorial Day weekend. The bookends of summer. I am glad I can say my summer was so full, I had no time to write but am sad about how far behind I am.

We were at the cottage in Grand Haven, MI celebrating the start of summer with friends and, on this day, I had my first pronto pup (a special corn dog). Remember this is before pescetarianism but I definitely wasn’t eating pork. However they’ve been a staple for others whenever we’ve been in GH and I was on vacation and our friends did bring a lot back to the cottage that would otherwise have gone to waste so I figured why not. And it was out of control. I haven’t had a hot dog in so long, I had forgotten about that taste, but nestled inside a crunchy house of corn. I mean come on. Woo.

I am sad I didn’t go to the stand myself to see the line and read the sign, “This is cholesterol COUNTRY. Health addicts please continue on and have a nice day”

But maybe I’ll make it down there next weekend for Labor Day.

Day 232: Froyo To Go

Ok I am officially writing too much about frozen yogurt. It’s become a big part of my life. My friend texts me when he wants it and we go. Weeknights, weekends its our social outing. We walk around Andersonville with froyo spying on all the other froyo eaters and avoiding that guy who is always cornering people to try and sell his cd.

Tonight, the froyo text is a group text. We meet several people at the Andersonville Forever Yogurt. However, we have other friends who cannot come at that moment. They jokingly request froyo to go. And we deliver. Cake batter and strawberry with Oreos and blueberries. French vanilla with cookie dough, brownie bites, marshmallow fluff and everything chocolate.

What’s fun about this is not only making crazy froyo combinations for someone else to eat but also seeing friends spur of the moment. On a Tuesday. My weeknights are just getting crazy.

Day 231: Closing Time

In a totally uncharacteristic move, I stayed out until 2am on a Monday. I was at an opening night celebration and I just did not leave until the bar closed. New friends and interesting conversation made it seem like very little time had passed. It sometimes feels good to do something outrageous on a work night. I certainly wasn’t thinking about my full Tuesday. I was living in the moment and enjoying myself. And that is pretty fun.

Day 222: Arthritis Party

I posted before about inviting people to a fundraising party for Team Year of Fun. Tonight was that party.

The date wasn’t a very good one for a lot of people so we ended up with a small crew of friends, many of whom had already donated. I did, however, have an iPad out at the party so a couple people donated and even more signed up to walk with me. Their donations and postings on Facebook drove other people to donate and Team Year of Fun ended having a little boom that blasted us back into second place! (Although I just checked now, since I’m writing this after the weekend, and another team has swooped in raising over $5,000 leaving us in third).

The party itself was a lot of fun. The hubs set up a quesadilla bar full of ingredients. People built their own and then the hubs grilled it for them. We played games and chatted. A few people even played a version of the 1980s game Battleship with shots of beer standing in for the ships (see picture below). It was fun to have people over, talk about the walk and spur some donations!

Day 218: FroYo

FroYo was last summer’s hottest dessert trend and I am excited that so many places have remained in business over Chicago’s extended winter. Tonight was the perfect night to take a stroll through Andersonville while eating FroYo from Forever Yogurt.

Self-serve in many delicious flavors with rows and rows of optional toppings (you pay by weight, not variety of items), I mean, what could be better? I went with cake batter under dark chocolate which I then covered in graham cracker crumbs. Usually I go for a little Cap’n Crunch on top, but I decided to try the brownie bites. (They are not as good, so I’ll stick with the CC next time). The hubs went healthier with traditional vanilla covered in fruit and peanuts. Ok, fine, he also had some salted caramel popcorn flavor that wasn’t all that tasty. I was hoping to try their thin mint–I’ve only heard amazing rumors about it–but they didn’t have it today. So I’ll probably have to go again. Very soon.

Oh, I’m just glad it’s finally Spring and I can eat delicious cold desserts out of doors!
