Day 120: Intentionally Indoors

I have not left the house today. In fact, I have been home for the last 28 hours and intend to be home for another 11 before going anywhere. This morning I posted a photo to Facebook of my weather app telling me it was ZERO degrees outside. ZERO. In that moment, I decided, “I am not leaving the house today. And it is going to be super fun.”

While most of my day was spent on the computer with work emails, life emails, bill paying, editing a personal statement for a friend, etc. I also managed to go through all my mail, swiffer the floors, play with Elphie, look through old Pottery Barn catalogues, try on new clothes that came in the mail, eat home made tacos with the hubs and enjoy an hour of uninterrupted Kardashian Television. Many of these things could be fun in and of themselves, but, for today, it is the combination of indoor activities and deciding to stay home that is fun. I literally was outside for about 30 seconds to let Elphie go potty and yet I accomplished so much.

I also took a moment to enjoy intentionally staying in as opposed to being forced to stay in. I’ve endured many stretches of multiple days inside due to illness or pain without finding the fun in it. Today, even though I never left the house, I felt free, active and productive.

Day 116: Experiment

Elphie’s and my walk today was more like an experiment: can I take pictures with my new camera and walk her at the same time? The answer, reached via the scientific method of course, is not really. But here is a sample of what I photographed anyway, along with some others of E at home.

Day 114: Beginnings

I started a new job today! My title is Development Associate, and while some of my work will be in individual campaigns, most of my job is grant writing. I’m going to make money writing. I never imagined that would be the case but am so pleased that it is.

My hours are part time, some in the office and some at home for writing, which works so well for me, especially managing my RA. I can easily schedule doctor appointments and can write from home on days when I’m not feeling up to going out. It also means that I can stay on in my current position two days per week to help out during a particularly busy time.

In order for this set up to function well, I have to have a laptop to take to work, home and anywhere else I might want to write. This was my special, secret present that necessitated a trip to the Apple Store. I’m writing this post on a MacBook Air. It is so light, so cute and I have everything synched to keep me efficient.

I’m very excited about this change, about beginning a new career path, about working in smaller theater company, about writing, about free weekends, about meeting new people, about developing my skills, and about raising money for valuable programs and projects that bring theater to youth and underserved communities.

Day 112: Ah, Reading

Guilty Pleasure Monday was just that today. I relaxed, did some online shopping, some casual cleaning and, when I’m done writing this, I will watch the latest episode of Downton Abbey.

The most relaxing thing about today so far, though, has been reading. I do enjoy reading for pleasure but don’t often make it a priority. One might think that, as someone, who often has to spend a lot of time resting, that I read all the time. Unfortunately, one would be wrong. But I’m turning it around-we have our first book club meeting in a few weeks and I’ve already finished the book!

When I first joined the book club, I thought the goal of reading one book per month might be lofty for me as I tend to take a slower pace (I’ve been reading the five Game of Thrones books for almost a year now). Yet, as soon as I finished the book for this month, I found myself yearning for another. Thankfully, my friend gave me a book she thought I would like, Wolf Hall. I’ve only just started this historical drama about Henry VIII told from Thomas Cromwell’s point of view, but I already love the language. There’s just nothing like curling up in a warm blanket on a big couch with a good book.

Day 111: Going to the Apple

Walking in to the Apple Store, I’m immediately transported in to a futuristic world where everyone is cool (you can tell by their glasses) and you can buy an iPhone by swiping your credit card through another iPhone. It’s always full yet you can still manage to find an open Mac Book to play with. I love Apple products so its not unheard of for me to go to the store just for fun. However today the hubs and I went for a very specific purpose, the details of which I cannot share just yet. But I can say, I did walk out with a medium sized box in my arms. Very fun.
