Day 334: Independence Day

Guess what. I’ve never seen Independence Day. (I suppose I’ve failed my generation). So when it was on tv today, I decided to give Kenley a head start on her cinematic education by watching it with her. (The hubs and I were babysitting Kenley so her parents could have a day date).

She was pretty critical of the special effects but I was a little more forgiving. Poor Harvey Fierstein just didn’t stand a chance against the fireball that was billowing down the streets of New York flinging cars in every direction. I was more concerned about how small Andrew Keegan’s role was. All he did was try to kiss the girl from Mrs. Doubtfire and then no more screen time. The 12 year old me who had multiple posters of him up in her room was crushed. But he went on to make classics like 10 Things I Hate About You and educational television programs like 7th Heaven. So that’s pretty cool for him.

Anyway the movie was Will Smith + Jeff Goldblum brilliance and I’m sorry I waited so long. I mean, welcome to Earth.

Day 333: Uncle Danny

The hubs and I made the journey to Iowa for him to meet baby Kenley. We ate delicious fish tacos and visited with the fam. And now Kenley has nothing but love for her Uncle Danny.

Day 326: Guilty Pleasure: Fantasy Football

After a full day of assessment at work as a methotrexate zombie, I came home wanting my usual guilty pleasures-sweets and bad tv. Then an idea, which had been brewing since a great conversation with our Wisconsin friend Andy, came to me; two-person fantasy football.

The hubs and I set up a league, went through all the rules (though apparently not thoroughly enough) and started doing research to prepare for a draft that night. Well, Yahoo cancelled our draft because you have to have at least four teams to play. For a while we were distraught, “none of our friends like football!” I put out a text and a Facebook post and while the response was certainly what you would expect from a bunch of theatre people, we got four interested parties to commit! Our league of two became a league of six! And we have an official draft on August 27, more time for me to study up and work on my spreadsheet.

Day 324: Monopoly

Ok. There aren’t that many days left in the Year. And while the summer has thrown my entire game off–byebye consistency–I am pledging to move forward with a post a day as well as catch up with the back log. So, if you get these in email, they might come a little out of order at times BUT they will be in order on the website. I know mostly for me it is important to do the fun but it doesn’t feel right to leave the written year incomplete.

So today. Tonight. The hubs and I made use of what we thought was originally an ill-advised app purchase. $6.99 for Monopoly on the iPad. And we both bought it. So we could play one group game with our friend Parvesh in Sun Valley. We thought we would probably never use it again until tonight when we needed some veg time. Two people, two iPads and $13.98 worth of app monopoly. It was actually super fun and interactive. Until I had to resign.

Day 322: Goodbye, Hello

Ok. Remember a while ago I posted about things to come…so one of the things was, obviously, the birth of my niece. The other is the announcement that I am working with Emily Alt Photography as the bookkeeper and creative consultant! I just really dig everything Emily and her husband are doing and want to be apart of it, even if I can’t go out on the road in the airstream (or can I?)

In case you did not know, Emily and Ian have quit their day jobs to pursue photography full-time and have serious plans to travel the country with their dog(s?) and cameras. On Day 321, we said goodbye to them as they packed up their Northside condo and moved to Michigan in search of adventures in airstreams, photography and self-employment. They just announced an AMAZING offer in some seriously RAD cities, so if you are planning on getting married in or looking to elope to Minneapolis, Austin, Asheville, Beaufort, New Orleans, Santa Fe, or Traverse City, check this out. Now. Like immediately. The rest of this post is not as important as you reading about the Pop Up Rolling Elopements.

And in case you don’t subscribe to her emails (why wouldn’t you? they are full of great offers!) here is the announcement that went out about my involvement: “Hey! I’m Sarah and I’m super jazzed to be working with my talented friends, Emily and Ian. As they venture out on the road, I’ll be keeping the books in Chicago and writing blog posts about anything from urban DIY photo art to utopian societies to pescetarianism. Theater, a husband, and a mini-goldendoodle named Elphaba occupy much of my time, yet I like to think of myself as an amateur photographer, musician and traveler. Even though I am a native Iowan and current Illinoisan, the northwest mitten state has stolen my heart. I enjoy long walks on her peaceful Lake Michigan beaches, hikes to the top of Empire Bluffs and drives through The Narrows–obviously the most beautiful place on Earth.” (Ridiculous I know, but also true).

For real, I am sad to see my friends leave Chicago but so so happy for their success, inspired by their bravery and awed by their art!
