Day 230: “Real” Photo Album

Before the big anniversary trip, a friend sent me a photo album, the kind with plastic pages ready for printed photos. Her note said it was for photos from the trip and Year of Fun. Because “who does that anymore?”

Since we’ve been back, I’ve dumped all the photos from the trip into iPhoto, played a slideshow on two different TVs from my iPad and posted an album on Facebook. All things digital. Today I was able to really look through and pick the best and funniest. I had to be selective. This album does not have seemingly endless “memory” nor is it free to “share” the pictures. Because I was printing them, I had to pay special attention to the photos and selection. I could not over share if I wanted to. 52 photos to tell the story of the trip, not hundreds. It was challenging, refreshing and fun. Thanks R!

Day 107: The Family that Plays Together

When I go home to Iowa, I always enforce family game nights. Some people drag their feet, but I know my family has fun and bonds over games. Well, now that my dad has a smart phone (finally), all of us can continue to play games even though we aren’t physically together.

Tonight I started Words With Friends games with my dad, mom, sister, brother-in-law, and, of course, the hubs. After an extended break from app games, I decided to return just to Words With Friends and not get sucked in to all the other “With Friends” games like I was previously. (Seriously, I had a problem). It is a small fun thing I can do each day to connect even more with family.

Also, I should give credit where credit is due; this fun thing was my sister’s idea.

Day 77: Christkindlmarket

It’s Guilty Pleasure Monday and the fun is a reader suggested activity! My friend Sarah suggested I meet her at the Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza. Conveniently located right near her work, Sarah has been more than once, so she showed me where to find the nesting dolls, indoor ornament stores and nutella crepes. I, unfortunately, came full from lunch so did not get to sample the crepes but I did makes some purchases while moseying around catching up with my friend.

Both of my purchases were unique for me; a bird ornament with a feather actually coming out the tail and a Tibetan Singing Bowl. The bowls caught my attention just by being gold and shiny. I thought, “what cute little bowls to put jewelry or something in.” The man working the booth (Tibetan?) told me that they sing and then demonstrated. With a wooden stick he circled the outside of the bowl creating a lovely, pure note. He mentioned they are used in meditation and yoga rooms and are meant to calm. The first time I tried it, it didn’t totally work for me, but I wanted it anyway. He wrapped it up and gave me some notes on my technique. (Obviously I practiced as soon as I got home and I am happy to report I can create the tone almost as well as this man. And it is quite soothing).

Most of the booths contain ornaments and other items handcrafted in other countries. (Hence why there are Tibetan Singing Bowls in a holiday market). Many of them are from Germany and the rest of Europe. You can also get cuckoo clocks, beer steins and many a wooden toy. I highly recommend checking this market out. It’s even worth a special trip to loop if you don’t regularly go there.

Day 64: Playing Footsie

Suggested activity, “wear silly socks on a day when others can see them to see who talks about them.”

Well, since Elphaba ate one and a half pairs of my shoes, I don’t have many winter weather and work appropriate shoes left.  This morning, when I was at a loss at what to wear on my feet, I remembered this suggested activity and decided to go for it. I went to work with my feet looking like this.

At first, I felt a little embarrassed. Like when someone high up at the theater got out of his car the same time I did and I thought we might ride the elevator together with my socks. That did not end up happening, but I was ashamed of myself for feeling embarrassed–totally not in the spirit of this activity. So then I started trying to get people to notice them by sticking my feet out from under the desk, doing full body stretches, and getting up from my chair a lot.

After hours of no one saying anything, I finally declared, “Hey look at my socks! I’m wearing them for fun!” I then got the responses I wanted: positive comments, eye rolls and chuckles. It was definitely fun trying to get people to notice them, but maybe I need some even sillier socks for this activity to really work?
