Day 43: Election Day

It’s election day! Like you needed me to tell you that. I’m sure your Facebook home page is just as full of voters, voting pictures, and people urging everyone to vote as mine. I love the atmosphere of an election day. While the days leading up to it may be full of political ads, canvassing calls and that one questionable Facebook tirade from someone from your past, today is all about the right we have as American citizens to vote.

Unfortunately, it is also often riddled with voting horror stories, from hours long lines to machine breakdown. State run voting means there is no standard registration, time frame or even voting method. Combine that with the effects of Sandy and people on the east coast are having quite the day.

In comparison, my voting experience was pleasant, a short wait at the local senior center that was filled with excitement and a little anxiety. I was the one who was excited and anxious. Everyone else seemed tired and bored. Honestly, the last time I voted was absentee and the time before that I was in college (No, I haven’t voted in the midterm elections. Yes, I feel bad about that. And yes, I will start). I was excited to be doing my civic duty and nervous about what exactly the voting process would be like this time around.

I was also nervous about how long my wait might be. I don’t do well standing for long periods of time especially in a line of some kind where there usually isn’t even a wall to lean on. And I don’t like asking for things from strangers, like a seat on the bus or a chair in a voting line. Luckily, I did not have this problem, though I was ready to sit down once I was all the way through.

In the end, I loved voting and am excited to watch the results with friends this evening. I’m hoping that everyone who has more trouble with it than I sticks it out and exercises their right to vote!

Having a voice is fun!

Day 42: Ambra Salon

It’s Guilty Pleasure Monday! I went to my salon (Ambra Salon – downtown on State and Superior) intending to get a haircut and a brow wax. However after she looked at my hair, my amazing stylist said she didn’t think I needed a cut yet (maybe in another month). So we just did a trim of my bangs and a wash and blow dry. That’s really the guilty pleasure part anyway, having someone else wash and style your hair. Not only do I find it extremely relaxing but it also makes me feel pretty and fancy. The brow wax on the other hand is not so relaxing but it still has that pretty and fancy effect.

Day 41: Sunday Dinner Part 2

I wrote about Sunday Dinner the first week of this blog. It was at that Sunday Dinner that I told my friends about this blog and my reasons for doing it. We have had Sunday Dinner almost every Sunday since then but I’m writing about it again because tonight, a very low pressure, small (in attendance) Sunday Dinner, was very fun. They always are because my friends are fun people, but I think part of the reason this one was sticks out is because it was planned last minute.

Part of doing something fun and writing this blog every day while also working and living a busy life is planning, making sure I have something fun to do and then time to do it and write about it. Lets be clear, I love planning. But sometimes it is fun to leave things a little more open. The days I don’t plan anything for this blog can be the most stressful (like getting home at 8pm, needing to have dinner and unwind but also needing to have fun and write about it before needing to sleep-a window of about two to three hours) but they can also be the best because I’ve left myself open to the possibility of unexpected fun.

I knew this dinner would be great and I knew I was going when I got up this morning. But I did not intend on writing about it. I did not have a plan.

Doing this for me has been, as I’ve said, to intentionally enjoy each day or something about each day. I’ve been doing that and one of the things I’ve learned is to also appreciate and enjoy the other elements that make up my day and to find fun in the things I already do. Of course I will still try new things and plan for fun but tonight made me realize that, before the blog, I had a lot of fun just living my life. However for many reasons I’ve discussed having mostly to do with RA, I wasn’t seeing it or appreciating it.

Today’s fun thing is really a lesson, one that is not profound but one that feels new to me tonight; love and enjoy what is fun in life, acknowledge that the small or routine can provide just as much fun as the large and spontaneous.

Now here are some pictures from dinner.

Day 40: Sporcle

So I was at work for 11 hours today. Around hour 8, some co-workers and I got on a Sporcle kick. Sporcle is an amazing website that is full of timed quizzes on various topics. It is great for people who love trivia, geography and passing time at work not working.

Three or four of us gathered around one computer. One person typed while the others shouted out answers. We did several quizzes ranging from find the Gaelic version of this English name in the list below to can you name these famous Captains from their pictures (ex. Captain Crunch, Captain Kirk, Captain Morgan)? From name all the Adam Sandler movies given the year of release and his character to to which countries are penguins native? Also, let’s not forget can you tell which celebrities these are even though their faces are upside down?

It’s truly quality entertainment and a great way to spend an 11 hour work day!

Day 39: the Card Aisle

This is another suggested activity-I’m on a roll. It was actually one of the first suggestions and it came from a former teacher of mine. We probably have not spoken since I graduated high school. Ten years ago! But we re-connected over this blog, and it has been really great catching up with her. She suggested I go to a Hallmark Store and read cards, especially funny ones, for at least ten minutes and laugh out loud at least five times.

Today, I was picking up a few things at my local Walgreens and decided to check out their card aisle. It is a little meager, compared to a whole Hallmark store, the likes of which I’m not sure we have in Chicago. However, I managed to find a few cards that made me chuckle; caroling with Yoda (it’s hard because he speaks strangely), a banana age joke, and, my favorite, Santa’s stache (see below). Walgreens has a whole line of Christmas cards that include fun things like ornaments, build your own mini tree, a banner and, of course, a Santa’s mustache. (I may have also purchased a December countdown to Christmas activity calendar. Squeal! It is probably full of ideas for Holiday related fun).

I decided to add to this activity by purchasing a few cards and sending them to friends for various reasons ranging from thank you to birthday. I enjoyed writing each friend a little note and hoping it would be a surprise when the card arrived in the mail. What a nice and simple way to spread a little love and fun.
