Day 214: Farmhouse Tavern

The hubs and I had an impromptu date night tonight. At work, one of my apprentices mentioned the restaurant she works at, Farmhouse Tavern, and recommended I try it. “Why not tonight?” I thought.

We made a reservation and went to dinner knowing only that they serve farm to table food. What we found was excellently prepared American and Southern influenced dishes accompanied by local craft beers (on tap!) and excellent service. The staff (unfortunately we couldn’t sit in my apprentice’s section) knew so much about the food, what beers to pair it with and were all around cool people. It was great to have such a good experience in a place more akin to a chill bar than a fancy restaurant. Farmhouse Tavern definitely makes the rotation.

Day 212: The Oldest Post

This is the oldest post I never wrote. Day 212. April 24. APRIL TWENTY FOURTH?! It was a Wednesday. According to my calendar, I had my regular Wednesday work meetings. Nothing else.

Well I hope Barbara Streisand had a happy birthday!

Day 201: Tea Time

Today was a relaxing day with very little plans. The goal of this weekend is relaxation. And tea with a friend is a great way to relax.

Jana and I get together as much as possible even though she is a busy mom who lives in the burbs. We caught up over cups of honeybush mango lemon rooibus (tea that I brought back from the trip) and covered topics ranging from her son speaking in complete sentences (what? that’s crazy) to reminiscing about how we used to race home from work to watch Elimidate in college. There really is nothing like a good girlfriend.

Day 200: Gala

Day 200 feels like a milestone as far as numbers go. As a day, it was pretty epic.

I got to work at 10:30am and got home from work at 1:00am the next day (today). It was our annual gala. My job was to talk to as many people as possible-introduce myself, talk up the company, and generally meet board members and subscribers/donors. Aka be outgoing and on my feet for several hours (like its your wedding)!

The first two hours went well. I talked to a lot of people and had fun doing so. Then came the sit down dinner with a program and awards. The trouble started when I tried to get up from this two hour meal. Two hours standing followed by two hours sitting equaled painful stiff feet. I spent the rest of the night oscillating between trying to talk to more people and sitting. I felt conflicted between work duties and physical necessity.

Thankfully this only went on for about an hour before most of the guests left. Afterward I could help clean up and transport people and things back to the theater without forcing myself to keep standing. The hubs-who attended and won a very cool beer-oriented silent auction item-was also a huge help at the end of night, carrying things and generally making my job easier.

All in all it was a fun night but I’m thankful to be at home resting for the rest of today.

Day 190: Chocolate and French Fries

We took it easy today, choosing mostly to indulge in some of Belgium’s finest treats, mainly chocolate and frites. First, I had a chocolate chaud (hot chocolate) that was basically just melted chocolate in a cup.

Second, we stopped at a chocolatier and learned all about the different kinds of chocolate from a lovely lady. She gave us some samples so we bought a box of 24 different chocolates that she hand picked for us.

Third, we took the train east in search of the “best fries in the world.” Maison Antoin came highly recommended both from online sources and from my rheumatologist whose daughter lived for a time in Belgium. They were pretty darn good, maybe the best ever. Potato-y and crispy with many sauce choices (we went for mayo and curry ketchup). Delicious.
